eSET Login Information

How do I log into eSET?

You also can access eSET through myOSU.

  • Enter your ONID username and password
  • Go to the Student tab
  • Click on "Student Evaluation of Teaching" under the My Student Stuff section

Please note that eSET works best with Firefox or Chrome and with pop-up windows enabled.

Taking the eSET Evaluation

Will I be asked to complete evaluations each term?

Yes. You will be asked to complete eSET each term for every qualifiying OSU course in which are you enrolled.  Please visit the calendar for the current term to find out when evaluations are open.

When can I evaluate my instructors?

Visit the eSET calendar to find out when the evaluation period is open.

I did not receive an email notification. What happened to it?

Email notifications about eSET are sent to your ONID account. Please check there. If you forward your email from your ONID account to a different email account, check your spam folder for the second account to see if the email was misdirected and your trash folder to make sure you didn't accidently delete the message.

One of my courses is listed multiple times. Do I fill out an evaluation for each instructor?

If you took a course that is co-taught by several instructors or a course with multiple sections, you may see the course listed several times. Fill out the evaluation for each instructor you personally had, including section leaders and teaching assistants. Decline the evaluation for those you didn't personally have as an instructor.

A course I took is not listed for evaluation. Why not?

All OSU credit classes are included in eSET except:

  • Courses with fewer than 6 students, per the Faculty Senate (2012)
  • INTO IEP courses
  • 700 level Pharmacy courses
  • Certain Veterinary Medicine courses
  • Certain blanket courses (those whose numbers start with 401-410, 501-510, 601-610, 701-710, and 801-810), for example, thesis and advising courses.

How do I evaluate my instructor for a blanket course (numbers starting with 401-410, 501-510, 601-610, 701-710, and 801-810)?

Currently, the majority of blanket courses are not evaluated.

Can I redo an evaluation?

Yes, evaluations can be redone as long as the evaluation period is still open. See the eSET Calendar for dates.

If you feel you have made an error on one or more of your evaluations and would like to re-evaluate an instructor, you may reset the evaluation. To reset an evaluation:

  • Log back into eSET
  • Click on the Reset button to the right of the course you would like to reevaluate
  • Enter the evaluation to provide your modified responses

Can I fill out the evaluation after the period is closed?

No. Evaluations can only be filled out during the evaluation period. See the eSET Calendar for dates.

Do I have to fill out the evaluation?

No. To decline an evaluation, go to eSET, enter the specific course, scroll to the bottom and select the Decline button.

Can I fill out a paper evaluation form?

No. OSU does not use paper evaluations.

Anonymity

How do I know my evaluation is kept anonymous?

There are several safeguards in place to protect student anonymity:

  • OSU uses a third-party vendor for eSET
  • No evaluations occur for courses with fewer than 6 students
  • Demographic information (e.g., class status or major) is not collected
  • All collected data go to a well-protected system off campus, and student ID numbers are NOT associated with reports
  • Your identity will be revealed only if you choose to "sign" your comments
    • If you click the "Yes" button, your comments will be viewable by BOTH the instructor and the instructor's supervisor, and your name will be identified with your comments (i.e., you will no longer be anonymous).
    • If you click the "No" button, you will remain anonymous and your written comments will be seen ONLY by the instructor. Evaluation reports are not released to instructors until AFTER the deadline for grades to be turned into the Registrar's Office has passed and grades have been posted to the web.

Do instructors have the ability to see feedback on their courses before assigning final grades?

No. Information is not available until after grades have been posted. Refer to the eSET calendar for report release dates for the current term.

What happens when I sign my comments?

A signed comment attaches your name to the comment, so it is no longer anonymous (the instructor can associate you with the comment). When you sign a comment it becomes viewable by the instructor's department head and dean as well. Unsigned comments are viewable only by the instructor.

Comments, whether signed or unsigned, are not viewable by instructors until after grades are filed.

Holds

Why is there an eSET hold on grades and transcripts?

The Faculty Senate decided to hold grades and transcripts until the completion of evaluations. The reasoning behind their decision is two-fold:

  1. Limits on viewing grades are placed because an evaluation should be based on the student's total experience in the course, not on their grades.
  2. Limits on viewing grades/accessing transcripts are intended to increase student response to evaluations. A high response rate is very important for the reliability of the data. These evaluations are taken seriously and considered as part of faculty promotion and tenure reviews.

We want to make course evaluations meaningful to inform and develop excellent instruction at OSU.

Will the course evaluation hold affect my ability to register?

No.  The hold placed by eSET does not affect registration.

I've finished or declined my evaluations, but can't see my grades. What do I do?

Completed

After you have completed all of your evaluations, a Remove Hold button should appear on the Student Evaluation of Teaching page in MyOSU.  Once you’ve pressed that button, holds on grades and transcripts should be removed within a few minutes. If you can't see your grades, you may have forgotten to click the Remove Hold button. Log out of eSET and log back in. This process should release the hold on your grades.

Declined

If you can't see your grades after declining evaluations, double check that you chose Decline for all applicable courses and completed the evaluations for the others. At this point, a Remove Hold button should appear on the Student Evaluation of Teaching page in MyOSU.  Once you’ve pressed that button, holds on grades and transcripts should be removed within a few minutes. If you can't see your grades, you may have forgotten to click the Remove Hold button. Log out of eSET and log back in. This process should release the hold on your grades.

Additional information for either situation

Occasionally students have to wait 24 hours for the hold to be released.

If your grade for the term is not visible, it may not have been posted by the instructor yet. There may also be a non-eSET related hold.

How can I find out about my holds?

To view holds on your transcripts and grades:

  • Access eSET, using this link or myOSU
  • Enter your ONID username and password
  • Go to the Student tab
  • Click on "View Holds" under the My Student Stuff section

Please note eSET is not the only type of hold on grades.

Technical Issues

I get a blank page when I try to do an evaluation. What is wrong?

This message generally appears because of browser issues. For example pop-ups need to be enabled on your browser or you may need to clear the browser's cache. Alternately you may need to try a different browser (Firefox and Chrome work best). Visit our Resolving Technical Problems page for information on other technical issues.

Where should I go for information about technical issues?
