Many professions (e.g. nursing, education, accounting) require individuals to obtain licensure or certification in addition to a degree to be eligible for employment. Licensure requirements vary by state and territory as well as by profession. Beyond the educational requirements, there may be additional requirements such as practical experience (internship or externship), licensure exams, background checks, or more. Each state or territory has its own licensing board/agency that oversees these requirements. BEFORE enrolling in an OSU program that leads to licensure (see list below), we strongly recommend that students:
Please note, the successful completion of a program at OSU does not guarantee licensure, certification, or employment in an occupation. Additionally, while progressing through any of these programs, we recommended that you check licensing agency requirements regularly to monitor whether they have changed in a way that impacts your licensure plans.
Prospective and current students should keep in mind that relocating to another state while studying at OSU could impact whether you can meet the eligibility requirements of that state. If you are a student who is considering relocating, you should check with the licensure board of the new state for licensure eligibility requirements.
If you still have questions after reviewing the information provided by the state agency, please contact your academic advisor at OSU. If they can’t answer your question, they should be able to direct you to someone who can.
If you need further assistance or are unsure where to direct your questions, you also can contact Curriculum Management at [email protected].

* The term licensure relates to any professional license, certificate, certification, or endorsement that may be required for employment in a particular occupation or profession.
